However, there are various dialects depending on the region, the intonation, the name of the thing, the wording are different. For the countryside, there are many elderly people who speak difficult dialects to strangers. But do not worry. Even Japanese people cannot understand unfamiliar dialects.

Japanese characters

Japanese sentences basically consist of the following three character sets.

  • Kanji(漢字) ← Chinese characters
  • Katakana(カタカナ)
  • Hiragana(ひらがな)

Alphabets and numbers are mixed in this. In case of casual emoji and so on.

Kanji is an ideographic letter imported from China long ago. Individual letters have meaning.

On the other hand, since katakana and hiragana are phonograms, there is no point.

You can write all Japanese in Katakana or Hiragana. But then it is difficult to distinguish between homonyms. Therefore we mix kanji it.

The neighboring Korea has also used kanji for a long time, but they abolished it in the modern era. Therefore, I heard that reading mistakes occurred frequently now.
