“Mochitsuki(餅つき)” is a traditional method of making rice cake.

Mochitsuki, 餅つき

We prepare the following items.

  • Usu(臼)← mortar with a hollow top
  • Kine(杵)← large mallet
  • Mochigome(もち米) ← rice type suitable for mochi
  • Bowl with water

First, set glutinous rice in the dent of the Usu. Then one person crushes it with a Kine and crushes it. Next, another person turns it with a wet hand. By repeating this work, rice gradually turns into paste.

However, the number of the events has decreased today because Mochitsuki is hard work. And rice cake made by machine is widely distributed.
